Thoughts from Sensei
It's not that I don't care at all...it's more that you need to know that I refuse to coddle you for your boo-boos. As a "highly qualified science teacher" I love pointing out that our physical bodies are made of the same elements which are born in the heart of exploding stars. Very, VERY often in Gaithersburg you'll hear one of my favorite expressions, "you're not made of glass."
If you sprain a finger or a toe, I don't care. If you bruise your foot or your shin, I don't care. If you get a tooth knocked out, I don't care (and you should keep your hands up). If you tear your ACL and are writhing in pain on the floor, I don't care. If you attempt a concrete break and gash your elbow, causing you to bleed all over the place...that's right, I don't care. You see, there is a big difference between being hurt and being injured. "Hurt" is a state of mind, I can only help you so far there. When your injured though...I still will look and act and speak like... I don't care. But the truth is, I care very much. I care more than you can fathom, but just like I don't jump every time one of my own children falls, I owe it to you to give you the opportunity to rise on your own. I owe you the opportunity to learn that while an experience may cause pain, it hasn't broken you. Whether you're hurt or injured, you deserve the opportunity to try and RISE on your own power. In those moments, when you think your hand or foot is broken, when you think you NEED a break, I may "not care". If, in those moments, I become emotional, then you would use me as your crutch when, in actuality, you don't need me. The fire of the Phoenix burns in all of us and it's that resilience that pushes us beyond those feeble boundaries that we've self-erected. I "don't care" because I truly care more than you will ever know. Train hard. Train smart. Train often. Osu!
